Portrait of a Peony

A few years ago I started to develop an interest in peonies. My Grandfather always had them all over his estate and I took them for granted. I started to notice the beautiful scent that many have, the history, and the grand varieties; I am hooked. I now have over 30 in my collection. Some are heirlooms from my grandfather and others are beautiful tree peonies or rare species peonies. They make lovely subjects for painting especially in acrylics.

The subject of this photograph and then painting was viewed on a garden tour in the Finger Lakes in New York State. I often tour gardens with my mother in the spring and summer for inspiration and just to enjoy the beautiful flowers.

I started with this photograph...

I then began to sketch it out in pencil.....

From there I started to paint on the canvas.....

And here is the finished piece....

I am happy with the finished work. The original along with prints and other items will be available on my Etsy Shop, White Violet Studio, when it opens in a few weeks. The original is a 16 " X 20" gallery canvas with the sides painted. Please e-mail me for more information or to be placed on an e-mail alert list of finished works.
